Niemi retires from his retirement to move to Portsmouth

Portsmouth have signed Antti Niemi on a one-year deal. He  suffered a serious wrist injury during his spell at Fulham last season. Niemi will provide cover for England international David James, who has just turned 39. 

The shot stopper was assessed during the recent pre-season tour to Portugal, and will now link up with Portsmouth goalkeeping coach David Coles, who previously worked at Southampton. 

The club also have Asmir Begovic and Jamie Ashdown as further options between the posts, although Begovic is likely to be loaned out to gain more experience.
