A day after the 1:1 (0:0) against VfL Bochum, the club parted from the 37-year-old trainer. Babbel is succeeded by the Swiss Christian Gross. After a crisis meeting on Sunday morning, the VfB bosses fired coach Markus Babbel. The two assistant coach Rainer Widmayer  and Alexander Zorniger are also no longer with the club. A week ago it was declared, Babbel should stay at least until the winter break.

Sports board manager Horst Heldt thanked Babbel for his "excellent work". Babbel reacted very emotionally, but sympathetic to his dismissal. "I wish the new coach all the best. I hope that he find the button and press it so that the team will start work again. I did not find him ". Babbel was also frustrated by the reaction of the fans "I have never seen such hate and there was absolutely no reason the fans to attack the team's bus"

Babbel is succeeded by Christian Gross. The 55-year-old Swiss last coached FC Basel and will lead on Morning his first training as VfB coach. "I'm here to save what can still be saved. I want the team go back to the winning way" said Gross.
